A costume wig does one of three jobs, and they need different things. It can be the whole character, in which case the shape has to be exactly right and nothing else matters. It can signal a genre — big curls for baroque, straight black for horror — where colour and volume are enough. Or it can just be hair, covering your own so the rest of the costume reads clean.
