Pirate Costumes: The Hat Does 80% of the Work

Almost no other costume is this forgiving. Put on a tricorn hat and you are a pirate — over a white shirt, over a leather jacket, over whatever you already own. Nobody has to ask.

Which is why the sensible way to shop for a pirate costume is backwards from how most people do it. Buy the hat properly, then decide how much else you actually need. A good tricorn over plain clothes beats a full polyester costume set with a flat felt hat, every time.

The hat: four things that differ

There are nineteen tricorns here between $44.99 and $53.99, and the price barely moves. What moves is the look.

Trim: braided gold, or nothing

This is the biggest fork. Gold braid reads captain, naval officer, theatrical. It photographs well because the metallic edge traces the silhouette. Rule of thumb: gold trim if you want to be the captain in the photo. No trim if you want the costume to look lived-in rather than bought.

Surface: clean or distressed

A flat, evenly-black hat is the single biggest giveaway that a costume came out of a bag. The distressed finishes cost the same and look considerably more expensive.

Colour: black or brown

Brim shape: symmetrical or asymmetrical

Most tricorns are symmetrical. A few are not, and it changes the character more than you would expect. Level 3: the full set

For children

Building the look without buying more

Three things you almost certainly already own that do most of the remaining work:

  • A white or cream loose shirt. Any billowy shirt reads period. A fitted modern one does not.

  • A belt worn over, not through. A wide belt cinched over a shirt, or a sash, breaks the modern waistline.

What you can skip: eyepatches, plastic hooks, fake parrots. They push the look toward “children's party” — fine if that is the event, and actively against you if it is not.

Quick questions before you choose

Will a tricorn hat fit me?

Most of the adult hats here are one-size with an internal band and sit fairly deep. The children's hats are cut noticeably smaller — a few list a numeric size around 54, which is a head circumference in centimetres, so measure around the forehead before ordering for a child.

Does the hat stay on?

Indoors, yes. Outdoors it behaves like any wide-brim hat in wind. If you are on a boat, at the coast, or in a parade, run a bobby pin through the inner band into your hair on each side.

Black or brown — which is safer?

Black if the event is indoors and evening. Brown if it is daytime or outdoors. Brown is also more forgiving if the rest of your outfit is not especially period-accurate, because it reads as “weathered traveller” rather than demanding a matching costume.

Can I wear a tricorn without a wig?

Yes, but be aware of the gap. A tricorn sits high, and with short modern hair there is a visible band of ordinary head between the hat and your collar. A wig, a bandana under the hat, or a raised collar all close it.

Is a pirate costume only for Halloween?

Less than most. Pirate is a standing theme at costume parties, cruises, renaissance and maritime festivals, and children's parties year-round. The plain brown hats in particular pass at any historical-themed event.

How do I store a tricorn so it keeps its shape?

Crown-up on a shelf, nothing stacked on it. The three corners are held by the brim's stitching; crush it flat and the folds will not sit the same way again. Ten minutes over bathroom steam and reshaping by hand while warm will bring most of it back.
